HYDERABAD: In the ensuing municipal elections, the creamy layer restriction will not apply to backward class candidates desiring to contest. Regardless of whether a BC belongs to an affluent section or not, he or she can contest the election. The state cabinet, which met here on Saturday, decided to make necessary amendments to the Visakhapatnam and Vijayawada Municipal Corporation Acts, Andhra Pradesh Municipal Corporation Act and  Andhra Pradesh Municipalities Act to exempt BCs from the creamy layer restriction as done in the case of GHMC ACT 1955.Briefing newsmen after the meeting, minister for information and public relations DK Aruna said the proposed amendment would enable reservation to all BCs in the elective posts without reference to sub-categories or creamy layer principle. The objective of the legislation is to empower BCs as a whole so as to ensure that reservation in elected bodies is made available to all the sections within the Backward Classes irrespective of their inter-classifications or the advancement of some sections among them.
