National Green Tribunal (NGT) on Monday slammed the Delhi government and three other neighbouring states – Punjab, Haryana and Rajasthan over its inaction to curb air pollution in the capital.
“Why weren’t preventive steps taken to curb air pollution?" the green panel asked Delhi government.
NGT decided to knock on the doors of Supreme Court over the issue which has affected millions of Delhiites.
Supreme Court on Tuesday will discuss the eight page report filed as a part of the ongoing MC Mehta case since 1985. The report was submitted by Centre for Science and Environment (CSE) over the worsening level of air pollution in Delhi and adjoining areas.
Earlier, CSE had approached the apex court and said that SC’s directives to curb pollution have not been followed by the government.
Residents in Delhi and its adjoining areas continue to reel under heavy smog cover on Monday even as Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal shut down schools in the city and appealed the office-goers to stay at home for the next three days.
Delhi is currently grappling with the worst smog in 17 years with visibility dipping to 500-600 meters in many parts of the city.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Najeeb Jung has called for an emergency meeting on Monday to take stock of the measures taken by Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
However, as per weather monitoring agency Skymet the city may find respite from toxic air as strong winds are likely to clear smog from the national capital in next 48-hours.
On Sunday, hundreds of people, including children, staged protests against the government and local administration’s lackadaisical attitude to handle the crisis.
The Gurugram district administration also swung in to action and banned burning of waste, garbage and other materials in open.
The order stated that action would be taken against anyone found burning waste material which increased the pollution level.
