AIIMS student, St Stephen's teacher commit suicide

New Delhi: A final year medical graduation student of the All Indian Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) on Wednesday committed suicide in his hostel room, police said.

Bal Mukund Bharti, who hailed from Madhya Pradesh, was found hanging in room number 22 of hostel-II on the AIIMS campus when one of his friends called around 1800 hrs IST. Bharti had attempted suicide on February 18 also by consuming excessive quantity of pills.

According to the police, Bharti could have taken the extreme step after performing poorly in exams.

"We were informed that he was under depression after failing in the examination. We are examining the case," a police official said.

Earlier, a 63-year-old professor of the prestigious St. Stephen's College jumped to death from his south Delhi residence, police said.

Mahesh Chander Jain, a teacher in chemistry department, was found dead in the courtyard of his house in Greater Kailash around 0830 hrs IST on Wednesday.

"We suspect that he jumped from the window of his second floor room," a police officer said.

"In his suicide note, Jain said no one else is responsible for his death. He said he was taking the extreme step as he was depressed," the officer added.

Jain was undergoing medication for depression.

He was last seen by his wife Sudha and daughter around 2200 hrs IST on Tuesday. In the morning, Sudha found Jain lying in a pool of blood and informed police.

Jain was teaching at St. Stephen's for the past 30 years and was to retire soon.
