TIRUVANNAMALAI: Among the four municipalities in Tiruvannamalai district, three have been clinched by the AIADMK, leaving one to the DMK.In the temple town of Tiruvannamalai, N Balachander of AIADMK was elected the chairperson. He defeated the sitting chairperson Sridharan of DMK by a margin of over 3,000 votes. Balachander got 36,528 votes while Sridharan got 33,347 votes. All the other 14 candidates in the fray lost their deposits.In Thiruvathipuram municipality, Pavai R of AIADMK clinched the top civic post by defeating the DMK candidate Baby M by a margin of around 3,000 votes. Pavai secured 10,161 votes while Baby got 7,758 votes.L Afzar of DMK was declared elected in Vandavasi municipality as its chairperson when she defeated her nearest Congress candidate by a slender margin of 179 votes. She got 4,709 votes to defeat her nearest Congress candidate J Shanthi who received 4,530 votes. P Rashida Begum of AIADMK stood third with 4,386 votes.In Arni Municipality, K Anandakumari of AIADMK has been declared elected. She bagged 14,272 votes and has defeated the nearest MDMK rival who polled 8,322 votes.DMK leads in Town Panchayats In the semi-urban Town panchayat civic bodies, the ruling AIADMK faced a set back in Tiruvannamalai district. Out of the 10 town panchayats in the district, AIADMK candidates won in 3 seats while DMK ended up with 5 seats and the independents getting 2 seats.
