The Mumbai Police has arrested a 70-year-old man for a crime that he allegedly committed 40 years ago. Dawood Bandu Khan, who had an affair with a 17-year-old woman back in 1984, was accused of sexually assaulting and raping her. After the minor’s mother filed a complaint with the DB Marg police, Dawood was taken into custody on accusations of rape and kidnapping. However, he soon secured bail and after getting out of jail married the woman when she attained the legally marriageable age.

After having their first child, the couple moved to Agra. According to a police official who briefed the media about the case, Dawood made the mistake of not informing the police or the court that that matter had been resolved since he had married the woman. This caused the case to linger on for decades. Dawood Bandu Khan was apprehended by Mumbai police in Agra following a court’s declaration of him as an absconder in January 2020 due to his non-appearance. With his wife and mother-in-law deceased, there are no individuals to retract the complaint against him, necessitating his trial for sexual assault.

Dawood repeatedly failed to attend court sessions, and a proclamation order was issued against him. His non-compliance led the court to release a non-bailable warrant against him, declaring him an absconder in January 2020. Recently, amid ongoing Lok Sabha elections and to uphold law and order in the city, Mumbai police initiated a special operation to locate and apprehend absconders, during which Dawood’s name surfaced.

DB Marg police stated that they lacked any leads on Khan, as he had relocated without notifying anyone over two decades ago. Additionally, the woman’s mother, who might have been the sole person aware of their whereabouts, had also passed away, according to the police. The police started looking for leads to find him and came to know about a chef who had been called to Agra by Dawood almost 10 years back to cook at his son’s wedding.

The police followed this lead, got in touch with the chef and ultimately tracked down Dawood at his Agra home. He was then arrested and brought back to Mumbai and during interrogation, Dawood revealed that he thought that the case had been closed since he married the woman. His wife had passed away in 2011 from natural causes.
