Actors who made promises and then vanished abruptly

The spectator's taste changes and thus every actor keeps an eye on the changing social and cultural patterns.

New Delhi: Wong Kar-wai's 'Chunking Express' says that everything comes with an expiry date, but sometimes the product expires before the due date. The debutant actors are like a well packaged bottle of carbonated cola which might not impress the audience once the cork is open. Apart from the hard labour, circumstances also play a vital role in an actor's journey. Those who get initial breakthrough may not survive after a year or so. Similarly, a bad opening doesn't ensure a devastated inning.

From Ayub Khan (Mashooq) to Rahul Roy (Aashiqui), there have been actors who displayed a lot of promise in the beginning but very soon went into oblivion. Khan and Roy were lucky that they embraced the small screen in time and kept floating along the stream but not all of them found career anchors.

Aditya Chopra's 'Mohabbatein' launched at least half a dozen new faces but no one except Jimmy Shergill survived. Preeti Jhangiani married and opted for less amount of work. Her husband Parvin Dabas was a promising acting talent as well, in fact he was emerging as a sensible actor when he decided to enter into direction with 'Sahi Dande Galat Bande'. Kim Sharma, Jugal Hansraj (He has become a director as well), Shamita Shetty and Uday Chopra (he is a CEO now) are not getting much work. The Hindi film industry still believes that a heroine can come up with her best work during her shelf life and that make things difficult for female members of the film industry.

Be it Gayatri Joshi (Swades) or Tulip Joshi (Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi Hai, Matrubhoomi) or Juhi Babbar (Kash Aap Hamare Hote), things changed drastically after a flop. The individual stories of Arya Babbar (Ab Ke Baras), Priyanshu and Rakesh Bapat (Tum Bin), Adhyayan Suman (Haal-e-Dil), and Nikhil Dwivedi (My Name Is Anthony Gonsalves) are more or less similar.

Poorna Jagannathan (Delhi Belly), Omi Vaidya (3 Idiots), Arunoday Singh (Yeh Saali Zindagi) and Gulshan Devaiah (Hate Story) have some time before getting into the league of Vivek Mushran and Kumar Gaurav.

The path is also full of thorns for Sayali Bhagat (The Train), Amy Jackson (Ek Deewana Tha), Kulraj Randhawa (Yamla Pagla Deewana) and Koena Mitra (Road). Tanushree (Aashiq Banaya Aapne) and Aamna Shariff (Aloo Chaat) are trying to brave the adverse waves but only time will decide their fate.

Actors such as Aftab Shivdasani (Mast) and Milind Soman (16 December) are trying their hands at different ventures while Sneha Ullal (Lucky), Zareen Khan (Veer), Nandana Sen (Tango Charlie) and Celina Jaitly (Jaanasheen) have forayed into the arena of TV commercials and chat shows.

The spectator's taste changes from time to time and thus every actor keeps an eye on the changing social and cultural patterns. Everybody wants to make a memorable comeback like Sridevi (English Vinglish) and Madhuri Dixit (Aaja Nachle) but doing so requires a Himalayan will and an impeccable desire to excel.
