New Delhi: Abhay Deol is looking forward to playing a 40-year-old IAS officer in Dibakar Banerjee's upcoming political thriller 'Shanghai', an adaptation of Greek author Vassilis Vassilikos 1966 novel 'Z'.

Abhay, who played the role of a thief in Dibakar's previous outing 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye', says he did not hesitate to take up the role of a middle-aged South Indian IAS officer, who finds himself pushed and pulled by various forces while on duty.

"I love Dibakar's style of filmmaking and it was phenomenal to be a part of his 'Oye Lucky Lucky Oye'. So when he told me to play someone much older than me in 'Shanghai', I did not hesitate. I wanted to be challenged as an actor," Abhay told PTI.

Fresh from the success of 'Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara', the 35-year-old has teamed up with Emraan Hashmi and Kalki Koechelin, his 'Dev D' co-star, for the film. 'Shanghai' is about common man's aspirations and dreams.

"The film is very different while being contemporary. The incidents are based in a small town in India. The film shows how most of us aspire to live a better life, get better roads and infrastructure. But then isn't it easier said than done?"

Abhay is known for taking unconventional roles in his career but the actor says he does not set any boundaries when it comes to picking up projects.

"I don't have boundaries when it comes to signing a project. 'Manorama - Six Feet Under' was an offbeat film, which was slightly serious and subtle. Then 'Ek Chalis Ki Last Local' was an out and out comedy. 'Socha Na Tha' was a romcom and a much more universal subject. 'Dev D' was a drama," Abhay says.

"The common link in each of these films is that they have been very content drive and the story as well as the character are strong," he adds.
