THIRUVANANATHAPURAM: ‘Swapnam’ is a dream-come-true for this husband, who lost his wife to a fatal disease seven months ago. The book, carrying 22 poems and two novelettes written by his wife Sunitha, was brought out by Prathapan as a befitting tribute to her, who left this world before the work saw light. The other day, at a quiet function organised by the Centre for Film Gender and Cultural Studies, a cultural organisation, ‘Swapnam’ was released. The poems are mostly about the poet’s dreams and impressions and some are her musings about people and incidents around her. Sunitha was a therapist who handled children with disabilities. It was in December 2010 that she was diagnosed with cancer destroying her pancreas. By the time she approached a doctor, they found that her disease was in the fourth stage. “She used to write poems right from her school days. She was waiting for her poetry collection to get bigger, before it went into print. But when she knew about her disease, she wanted to see her poems published. She had even compiled all her works worth publishing; but in April, she succumbed to the disease,’’ says Prathapan, a tutorial teacher and an advocate. They got married ten years ago and had no children. Sunitha’s poems had appeared in many weeklies during her college days. She kept writing short novels and poems with the dream that some day she would join the writers’ league. However, amidst the job as a therapist, her poetic outings were few, which was why she never dared to approach any publisher. Now, when it finally has become a reality, the 34-year-old is no more, laments her husband. Prathapan hopes that the release of the book would at least allow her soul to rest in peace as it was Sunitha’s biggest dream.
