For the students and teachers of the Sree Chitra Thirunal College of Engineering (SCTCE), Pappanamcode, September 13 would be a day to forget. Such was the pain that the black Thursday inflicted on them by snatching away three students who were familiar among their pals with their caring and playful character.
The news of the death of Sharon, Praveen and Unnikrishnan, all of them seventh semester students of Mechanical Automobile Engineering, came as a big jolt to their friends. The death was conveyed to the friends in the wee hours of Thursday by the police.
The accident occurred near Korani when the youths were returning from Varkala after a short trip. The trip was planned as a breather after completing their semester seminar.
Barring a few close friends and college faculties, the rest of the students knew about the tragedy only after dawn. The grief-stricken students surged to the Medical College Hospital, where the bodies were kept. At the hospital, the teachers tried in vain to console the weeping students, who were still not able to accept the fact that their three friends were no more.
“The three were thick friends and shared a cordial relation with all the students. They were liked by everyone for their innocence and good behaviour. It has been difficult to console their classmates, who are left traumatised,” said Syed Fazil, a seventh semester Computer Science student.
The two injured students, Jishnu and George, were not informed about the death of their friends.
Sharon’s mother Shyni George, sister Sheon and Unnikrishnan Junior’s father Unnikrishnan were present at the hospital waiting to receive the bodies of their dear ones. Praveen’s family members had started for Thiruvananthapuram from Kannur after hearing about the accident, but returned midway after being informed of his death. Praveen’s cousin, a doctor, stayed back at the hospital to complete the formalities. After conducting autopsies, the bodies were handed over to the families by 4 pm.
The bodies were taken to their native places in ambulances and were accompanied by classmates and close friends in two buses.
