New Delhi: It has long been claimed by women's rights groups and gender equality campaigners. And now the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau for 2011 has validated it. In India, a victim of rape is more likely to be assaulted by someone known to her from before. Of the 24206 victims of the crime in 2011, 22549 knew the rapists. So an astounding 93.1 per cent of victims knew their assaulters. While 7835 of them were neighbours, 1560 relatives too perpetrated the heinous act on their kins. There were 267 instances where parents raped their own daughters. The 12887 known others obviously include: boyfriends, friends, colleagues, etc.

In case of certain states like Andhra Pradesh (1442 rapes), Assam (1700), Bihar (934), Chhattisgarh (1053), Haryana (733), Madhya Pradesh (3406), Odisha (1112), Jharkhand (784) and Uttar Pradesh (2042), hundred per cent of victims were violated by men known to them.

And Delhi (558 out of 572), Goa(28 out of 29), Gujarat (438 out of 439), Kerala (1119 out of 1132), Maharashtra (1699 out of 1701), Rajasthan (1689 out of 1800) and Tamil Nadu (675 out of 677) do not miss the cent per cent mark by much.

In Karnataka, 352 out of 636 victims and in West Bengal, 1184 out of 2363 vcitims knew their assaulters. These are the only two major states that had a significant number of rapes committed by people unknown to their victims.
