New Delhi: Eighty-three-year-old Vidya Stokes was on Thursday elected as the president of Hockey India, while Narendra Batra will be the general secretary.
Stokes beat former India captain Pargat Singh in the election held in Delhi. She won by a comfortable margin of 41 votes to 21. Batra, also from the Stokes camp, also won his election by a comfortable margin.
The electins were held after four missed deadlines and a litany of court cases. Stokes though will have to wait till August 19 to take over as president as the the supreme court will make a final ruling on the stay order issued by the Delhi and Bombay High Courts on that day.
The International Hockey Federation had earlier made it clear that if Hockey India fails to conduct the elections this time, India will be barred from playing in international tournaments.
