For instance, Rohu, Katla and Puntius are freshwater fish, while Pomfret, Bombay duck, Bhetki and Hilsa are sourced from saltwater. Fish like catfish, Taki and prawns are low in fat, whereas Panga, Chital, Bhetki and Hilsa have a higher fat content. Despite their benefits, there are a few types of fish you should avoid due to potential health risks.

Catfish:

These are often injected with hormones, making them harmful to consume. It is advisable to avoid purchasing large catfish from the market. Instead, opt for smaller ones as these are comparatively safer.

Mackerel:

Although Mackerel is rich in vitamins A and D, it also reportedly contains mercury. It can accumulate in your body and lead to serious health issues when consumed regularly.

Tilapia:

Due to its high demand, Tilapia is extensively farmed, often in overcrowded conditions where the fish are fed commercial feed or even chicken waste. Consuming large amounts of Tilapia can increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes and asthma, reports suggest. Tilapia has low protein levels and contains dibutyltin, a chemical that can trigger asthma and allergies in some.

Tuna:

Tuna is packed with vitamins B-3, B-12, B-6, B-1, B-2 and D, but similar to Mackerel, it has high mercury levels. Additionally, this fish is sometimes treated with hormones and antibiotics, which can be detrimental to your health.

Sardine:

Similar to Tuna and Mackerel, Sardines are marine fish that contain high amounts of mercury, posing significant health risks.

Basa Fish:

Often used as a substitute for Bhetki in dishes like fish curries or fish fingers, Basa Fish reportedly contains harmful fatty acids that can raise cholesterol levels. People with respiratory issues or arthritis should avoid this fish.

In many countries, raw fish is commonly consumed, but given the climate in our region, eating raw fish is not advisable. It can lead to stomach issues and in some cases, raw fish may contain harmful bacteria. Eating fish daily can be beneficial due to its protein content. However, moderation is key, as overconsumption of certain types might cause stomach discomfort and pose health risks in the long run.
