So far 25 complaints of excess fees charged engineering colleges has been reported to the One Man Committee set up by the State. Professor P Venkataramaiah, former vice-chancellor of Kuvempu University, who heads the committee said: “The committee would hold talks with the institutions and these institutions would have to reimburse the excess fee charged in the name of infrastructure development and miscellaneous fee.”
Describing the cases, Venkataramaiah said: “Large number of students have complained that engineering colleges are charging about Rs 40,000 to Rs 50,000 along with the tuition fees prescribed by the government. The extra fees are charged in the miscellaneous or development fee category, when the students reach the colleges with the admission order from KEA.”
It may be recollected that as per the consensual agreement, students choosing seats from government colleges and government seats from private colleges would have to pay the prescribed fee as announced by the government. He also said that institutions have introduced innovative ways of luring students to pay up excess fee. “A certain college has come up with insurance fee charged for students and parents as well.
Meanwhile, four to five complaints regarding excess fee charged in the medical colleges have been registered. He said: “Students are confused as these excess fees are charged with university registration fee and helinet fee prescribed by the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences. Students claim that they have been told that these fees are mandatory and want to know if they should be paying such fees.”
