The Trinamool Congress activist and CP(M) supporters clashed in the outskirts of Kolkata on Tuesday.

Kolkata: One person was killed and four others sustained bullet injuries on Tuesday after a group clash over immersion of a Durga idol took a political hue at Kulipara in Bidhannagar on the eastern fringe of the city.

ADG (Law and Order) S Karpurakayastha said the trouble sparked off last night but was settled later. This morning they regrouped and clashed again exchanging several rounds of fire. The clash soon turned into a political confrontation between CPI(M) and Trinamool Congress.

The deceased was identified as Balai Mondal, a Trinamool Congress activist, Karpurakayastha said. He succumbed to bullet injuries at state-run NRS medical college and hospital.

Rapid Action Force personnel, in addition to a strong police force, were deployed in the area after several houses were ransacked by the rampaging mob.
