How to Freeze Apple Pie
How to Freeze Apple Pie
Apple pie is delicious on any occasion, but you can’t always eat it fresh. Freezing is the best option to get the most out of your pie for another 3-4 months. Whether it’s baked or unbaked, you can use a combination of aluminum foil and plastic wrap to carefully store your apple pie until you’re ready to eat it later.
Steps

Freezing an Unbaked Pie

Make a pie with small fruit chunks for easier storage. Cut your apple slices into small, poker chip-sized pieces. Smaller pieces will be easier to fit into your pie and will make it easier to store in the freezer later. Granny Smith apples are great to use in apple pies due to their firmness. You can mix two different types of apples together in the pie, as well.

Set your pie in a metal dish. Place your pie in a metal dish as you prepare it. When you bake your pie later, the metal should have no problem transferring from the cold freezer to a hot oven. Avoid using pie dishes made of glass, as these may shatter during an extreme temperature change. Some ceramic dishes are also safe to use in the oven. Check the manufacturer’s website if you want to double check.

Wrap the entire pie with plastic wrap several times. Take a long piece of plastic wrap and completely cover the top of the pie. Use at least 3 pieces of plastic wrap to make sure that all of the pie has been covered. For more secure application, have the plastic wrap go under the pie dish as well.

Cover the pie with a large sheet of foil. Cut a long piece of aluminum foil and place it over the layers of plastic wrap. Tuck in the foil around the edges of the pie to make sure that it is secure. You can place the pie in a plastic bag if you don’t want to use foil. Make sure that the bag is large enough to hold the pie, and that you can reseal it. If you’re planning on keeping your pie in the freezer for less than a week, you don’t need to cover it with foil.

Label the pie with the date. Write this information on a piece of masking tape to place as a label on the pie’s foil. You can also take note on a scrap piece of paper when you’ve made the pie. If you use a piece of scrap paper, make sure to keep it in a secure place so that you can find it later. You can buy special freezer tape at most generic stores or online marketplaces.

Freeze the pie for up to 4 months. Find a flat, open area in your freezer to place your pie. Make sure that you don’t place anything on top of the pie, so the apples and crust don’t get flattened. Try not to keep your pie frozen for more than four months, as it won’t be fresh by that point. If you’re using a chest freezer, make sure that delicate items like the pie remain on top.

Storing Leftover Pie in the Freezer

Let the pie cool completely before freezing it. Once your pie is no longer hot to the touch, place it uncovered in the refrigerator for at least an hour until it has thoroughly cooled. If the pie is warm when you place it in the freezer, it may cause other frozen foods to start thawing, which may negatively impact their quality.

Wrap the pie in 2 layers of foil. Take a long sheet of foil and cover the entire surface of the pie. Use at least 2 sheets of aluminum foil to ensure that the pie is completely covered. Keep the pie in the dish when you’re preparing it for the freezer.

Put the pie into the freezer and store it for up to 4 months. Make sure that you have enough space before you freeze the apple pie. Although your pie has already been cooked, you don’t want to risk anything damaging the pie’s appearance or taste. Even though you’ve already baked your pie, make sure to take a mental or written note of when the pie was cooked. Try to eat the rest of the pie within 4 months.

Defrost the pie at room temperature for 3 hours. Take the pie out of the freezer and set it on a counter or other flat surface at room temperature. Wait at least 3 hours for the pie to completely defrost. This helps to melt any parts of the pie that have completely frozen.

Bake the pie for 15 minutes at 425 °F (218 °C) to heat it up. Preheat the oven to 425 °F (218 °C) and let the pie bake for 15 minutes to freshen the pie. Even though the pie has already been cooked, putting it in the oven again will help it taste as warm and fresh as the day you made it. Consider microwaving an individual slice of pie to defrost it more quickly. Place the pie slice in the microwave and reheat it at small intervals, like 10-20 seconds. Continue reheating the pie until it reaches your desired temperature.
