Indian Super League (ISL) runners-up from the inaugural season, Kerala Blasters, have denied reports that they are close to signing former Liverpool star John Arne Riise as their marquee signing this year.
The rumour mill is abuzz that Riise might replace David James as Kerala's star player for second season of the ISL this year and while a source close to the development confirmed IBNLive Sports that the team manager and management are still very much interested in the player, there are roadblocks in the deal.
"Coach and management have a strong interest to have Riise in the team but we cannot force anyone to join us. He is a great player and will surely improve the team. Let's see what happens," the source said without elaborating much.
The Norwegian international scored 6 times in 30 appearances for APOEL in the Cypriot First Division this season and is now a free agent as his contract has terminated after a mutual consent. And Riise's wife has already confirmed the former Premier League full-back's decision to move to India in her blog.
"John Arne has now decided, and the choice is India. We look forward to two exciting years with new challenges and a new culture. India is a fairly new league which is on the rise. He wants to use his experience so that the league can be even greater," she confirmed in her blog.
According to another source, Delhi Dynamos are also very much interested in the player and the deal may end up in a tug of war between the two clubs.
The decision from Riise is expected be known soon.
