The last two years have been nothing less than impressive for singer Jonita Gandhi. While she has delivered several hits since the beginning of her career, she has been ruling the music charts more frequently since 2022. Having started that year with the foot-tapping “Arabic Kuthu” from Beast to getting everyone learning the hookstep of “What Jhumka?” from Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, Jonita did it all. She took things a notch higher this year when she moved everyone to tears with the song Vida Karo, from Amar Singh Chamkila.
Jonita confessed that it was one of the toughest songs to sing in her music career. “It is such a delicate song and I felt a bit of pressure in delivering what I knew would be a very special song, given the project it was for and the people who made it,” Jonita told News18 Showsha exclusively.
“I was asked to sound melancholic, and I guess that came naturally given the melody and lyric to the song. It was a special experience singing Vida Karo, and I remember having to be very particular about where I would take breaths between the lines/words,” the singer added. Composed by AR Rahman, this marked her more recent collaboration with the Oscar-winning composer. “I was called to come in and record, and that’s kinda the whole story (laughs). It’s always exciting to go into Rahman sir’s studio because there’s always something new to learn,” Jonita said.
Jonita further said that her song Love Like That from her debut EP has been her most memorable release of the past two years. “Love Like That from my debut EP has a really special place in my heart. It’s the first song that I released with full creative control, and I loved the people who I got to work on the song with! I think making all the songs on that project really helped me define the sound that I wanted to go forward with as an artist, fusing my Eastern and Western influences together in a particular way,” she said.
Most recently, the singer collaborated with Amazon Music for their new series, Desi Vibes. Shedding light on the collaboration, Jonita said, “It was so much fun to be part of Desi Vibes with Amazon Music. I’m thrilled that they gave me this platform to let people get to know me and my work on a larger scale! Desi Vibes is all about Indian Music and taking the Indian-ness of our songs and culture to the global stage. Collaborating with Amazon Music was a great experience and being a part of Artist Diaries was so therapeutic and fun!”
Although her music career is at a great high right now, Jonita adimtted that her parents — like most of our parents — also ask her the big wedding question. However, she added, they don’t pressure her into ‘settling down.’ “My parents would definitely like to see me married haha, but they’re really supportive and know that I’ll only make that kind of move when I feel the time is right,” she said.
On a concluding note, Jonita revealed that she has a lot of new music in the making. “I’m working on my next few non-film releases and I’m really excited to share them with you!” she concluded.
