Time Zone Cheating by IB Students, First Ever Paper Leak Reported in Over 55 Years
The IB stated that just a small portion of students had engaged in "time zone cheating," and that there was "no evidence" that this conduct was widespread

In a case of modern-day academic cheating, students who took the Class 12 board examinations for the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDB) are said to have memorised their Maths question papers and posted them on social media, perhaps helping students who were taking the tests at a location in a different time zone. The IB board administers its annual assessments in three time zones– Zone A, Asia and Australia; Zone B, Europe and Africa; Zone C, Americas. Notably, students are not authorised to take the IBDP question papers home, leaving no scope for paper leaks. In the more than 55-year existence of the Switzerland-based board, this is the first case of a question paper leak, reported Times of India.

The two-hour Maths test took place on May 1 and 2, with the alleged paper leak coming to light on May 3. Although the board acknowledged the matter, it did not identify the country from where the paper leak originated. However, the report hinted that principals in Mumbai suspect the questions to be leaked from Turkey.

According to TOI, The variation in time zones meant that while students in Hong Kong, Singapore, Europe, and the Americas would have benefited, Indian students were less likely to gain from the paper leak.

Amid requests for exam cancellation by some parents and students, the board maintains confidence in the general integrity of the IB exams and believes that there is no proof of large scale cheating.

In its report, the IB stated that just a small portion of students had engaged in “time zone cheating,” and that there was “no evidence” that this conduct was widespread. According to the report, the IB stated, “We have identified the source of this activity and are taking appropriate steps to hold those responsible accountable.”
