Sanju Samson played sensibly when wickets were falling from the other end. His 108-run knock was laced with 6 fours and three sixes.

Sanju Samson smashed his maiden international century on Thursday in the third ODI match against South Africa at Boland Park, Paarl. Samson, who was snubbed from India’s ODI World Cup squad earlier this year, batted sensibly and played a fine knock to help India reach a fighting total in the series decider.

India made a couple of changes in their playing XI as Samson was also promoted to bat at number 3 – the position where he usually bats for his domestic and IPL sides.

The wicketkeeper batter grabbed the opportunity with both hands and scored his first ODI century.

He stitched a 52-run stand alongside skipper KL Rahul for the third wicket after the two openers failed to put up a big score. However, Rahul was also dismissed for 28 and then Samson joined hands with young Tilak Verma to revive the Indian innings.

The duo played sensibly to put India in a good position with a 116-run stand for the fourth wicket.

Samson’s 108-run knock was laced with 6 fours and three sixes.

He made his international debut in 2015 but didn’t get consistent chances with MS Dhoni being the main wicketkeeper batter for India at that time. Meanwhile, he made his ODI debut in 2021 but has not been able to cement his place in the team yet. However, the knock  on Thursday is expected to give a much-needed boost to his career.

Samson celebrated his century by flexing his muscles as the internet also hailed the flamboyant batter as he enjoys a massive fan following on social media.

Rinku Singh, who made his debut in the second,  also chipped in for the visitors with a 38-run knock off 27 balls.

Beuran Hendricks (3/63) was the pick of the bowlers for South Africa, while Nandre Burger (2/64) also accounted for two wickets.

Brief Scores:

India: 296 for 8 in 50 overs (Sanju Samson 108, Tilak Varma 52; Beuran Hendricks 3/63).
