Pat Cummins To KL Rahul: 5 Players Likely To Be Released Ahead Of IPL 2025 Mega Auction
Here's a look at five high-profile players who are likely to be released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has yet to announce the retention rules for the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League, and it remains to be seen how many players each team will be allowed to retain. The BCCI organised a meeting with the IPL franchise owners last month in Mumbai and is likely to release the rules in the coming days.

While many top Indian and overseas players are likely to be retained by their existing franchises after super performances in the IPL 2024, there’ll be some big players who have to part ways and find a new team.

Here’s a look at five high-profile players who’re likely to be released ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Pat Cummins: Pat Cummins was signed for Rs 20.50 crore by Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2024 mini auction and was appointed as the captain in place of Aiden Markram. In his maiden season as skipper in the cash-rich league, the Australian pacer took SRH to the final. But despite his successful stint, he could be released by the Hyderabad-based franchise, which may prefer to retain Travis Head and Heinrich Klaasen as two overseas players.

KL Rahul: Rahul was signed by LSG for Rs 17 crore ahead of the IPL 2022 mega auction, and he led the franchise in the last three editions of the cash-rich league. However, after his animated chat with LSG owner Sanjeev Goenka in IPL 2024 went viral on the internet, there were reports that he would leave the franchise. While it has been reported in the last couple of days that KL is likely to be retained ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, it won’t be a surprise if LSG part with ways its all-time leading run scorer.

David Warner: Warner holds the record for scoring most runs in IPL history by an overseas batter. The former Australian opener is a IPL legend but was unable to do well for the Delhi Capitals in the last three seasons of the cash-rich league, which is why there is a high chance that he will not be retained by the Delhi-based franchise ahead of the IPL 2025 mega auction.

Yuzvendra Chahal: Chahal holds the record for taking most wickets in IPL history (205), and in addition to that, he is also the all-time leading wicket-taker for the Rajasthan Royals (66) in the world’s richest franchise cricket league. But since RR is likely to retain Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and probably Riyan Parag, Chahal will be released and enter the auction pool again.

Mitchell Starc: Australian pacer Mitchell Starc joined Kolkata Knight Riders for Rs 24.75 crore in the IPL 2024 auction, which is the record for most amount of money paid for one player in IPL history. Even though the left-arm pacer won the POTM award in the IPL final as well as the first qualifier match against SRH, he failed to impress with his performance in the majority of the matches, which is why there is a high possibility that KKR will part ways with him just after one season.
