Paramedics Attend MCC Member After Being Struck on Head by Six During ENG vs SL Lord's Test, Play Halted Briefly
A member of MCC was struck on his head while taking a catch during the second day of 2nd Test between England and Sri Lanka.

An attempt at taking a catch proved painful for a spectator at the ongoing 2nd Test between England and Sri Lanka on Friday. Kamindu Mendis struck a six off Olly Stone in the 55th over and a member of the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) tried taking the catch while sitting outside the Lord’s pavilion but the ball burst through his palms and struck him on the head.

Stone was testing Mendis with short delivery and the Sri Lankan batter responded with an attempted hook shot which resulted in a top-edge that sent the ball flying over the wicketkeeper’s head. There were concerned faces all around after the MCC member copped the blow and the play was halted for a few moments.

The paramedics checked on the member who reportedly left the seating area but was later pictured speaking to Sri Lankan players. Mendis finished with 74 off 120 – the innings’ top-scorer as the tourists were bowled out for 196 in reply to England’s first innings total of 427-all out.

Mendis later enquired about the MCC member while returning to the Sri Lankan dressing room. England have taken control of the contest having extended their lead to 256 runs at the close of play on Day 2.

Opener Dan Lawrence (7) was dismissed cheaply by Lahiru Kumara before Ben Duckett (15*) and captain Ollie Pope (2*) saw through the remaining 11 deliveries of the day’s play as England were 25/1 in seven overs.

It’s been a memorable contest for England’s Gut Atkinson who after taking a five-wicket haul on Test debut (match haul of 12) at Lord’s against the West Indies last month followed the superlative effort with a sparkling century against Sri Lanka on Friday. He’s just the sixth cricketer in history to complete the double of 10-wicket haul and a Test hundred at Lord’s considered to be the ‘Home of Cricket’.

“It’s amazing. As a boy growing up, I always dreamt of getting on the Lord’s honours board. To be honest, I never thought I’ll be up there for a hundred. So to be up there is special,” Atkinson told the England and Wales Cricket Board.
