'IPL Should Not be Basis for Selection...': Batting Legend's Big Call on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli Ahead of T20 World Cup
Performances in the ongoing IPL 2024 will definitely play a role in how India's squad shapes up for the upcoming T20 World Cup.

With the deadline for submitting the provisional squad for the T20 World Cup 2024 approaching, there’s an been intense speculation over who will make the cut or miss the bus. The BCCI selection committee is expected to meet and take a call on the squad composition in the next few days days and they will have the luxury to dip into a wide pool of players to choose from.

While it gives the selection panel headed by Ajit Agarkar plenty of options to pick from, they can pick only as much players meaning a few top performers will be left disappointed at not seeing their names among the shortlist.

There’s a red-hot debate over who should be opening alongside Rohit Sharma at the world cup with Virat Kohli being the frontrunner. However, the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Ruturaj Gaikwad, KL Rahul also have a strong claim given their current IPL form.

Former India opener Kris Srikkanth though feels that the team should pick Kohli as the designated opener given they have to look at the balance of the playing XI.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal was a strong contender in my team, but as of now, it’s going to be Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma who will open the innings for me in the T20 World Cup. Because I will have to look at the balance, who’s going to come at No.3, who’s going to bat at No.4, what is the impact you want to create, you need to take all those things into account,” Srikkanth said on Star Sports.

“Sometimes, you have to take hard calls as the chairman of the selection committee. It will be difficult as Yashasvi is a very good player, his track record is good, but for me, it will be Rohit and Kohli opening,” he added.

Srikkanth has advised the selectors to avoid the recency bias and look at the track record of players without solely relying on IPL 2024 to pick the players.

“IPL, for me, should not be the basis for selection in the T20 World Cup. IPL is a pointer, let’s be very clear. And at the end of the day, you will have to understand that a World Cup is a World Cup,” he said.

“It’s a mega tournament, and you will have to look at international capabilities, whether they can counter and win matches and what are the kinds of track records they have in T20Is. You will have to take into account past performances, current form and fitness. IPL can be taken into account, but it should not be the only thing,” he added.
