Team India’s young opening sensation Yashasvi Jaiswal scaled yet another milestone in his nascent career as he went past some greats of the game to score the most runs in a Test series for India against England with his knock at Dharamshala on Day 1 of the fifth and final Test of the series between the sides.
Jaiswal’s half-century at the HPCA Ground on Thursday took his series ally beyond the 700 runs mark in the ongoing series against England as he overtook some massive names in Indian cricket.
The left-hander made a 57-run contribution to India’s cause to push his series total to 712 runs against England.
Former Indian skipper and star batter Virat Kohli held the mantle in the parameter up until Jaiswal’s innings at the picturesque stadium in Himachal Pradesh, as the 35-year-old had made 655 runs during the home series against the English back in the year 2016.
Legendary Rahul Dravid’d 602 runs against the Englishmen in 2002 on foreign soil now stands third in the list and is followed by Kohli’s 593 run tally in the 2018 home series against the touring English.
Vijay Manjrekar’s 586 run total in the 1961/62 series against England in India is the fifth highest for an Indian batter and is ahead of the iconic Sunil Gavaskar’s 542 run showing away from home all the way back in the 1979 season.
England won the toss and opted to bat first in the final Test of the tour and were bundled out for 218 runs thanks to the wizardry of the Indian spin unit, which claimed all ten wickets on the opening day.
Left-arm leggie Kuldeep Yadav led from the front as he picked up a five-wicket haul, which included the prized wickets of Ben Duckett, Zak Crawley, Ollie Pope, Jonny Bairstow and skipper Ben Stokes.
Star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja added a wicket as he removed veteran batter Joe Root from the crease for 26 runs.
Ravichandran Ashwin, playing his 100th Test, polished off the English first innings with his dismissals of Tom Hartley, Mark Wood, Ben Foakes and James Anderson before the Indian batters took guard.
