Team India middle-order batter Shreyas Iyer opened up on playing Ranji Trophy ahead of the Test series against England to get back his red-ball rhythm. After missing out on the T20I squad for Afghanistan series, Iyer decided to play the Ranji Trophy match against Andhra and helped his team Mumbai register a crucial win.
Iyer scored a run-a-ball 48 as the Andhra bowlers also tried to exploit his weakness against short ball.

The Mumbaikar said the intensity in the Test series against England is going to be high which he why he decided to play the Ranji Trophy to get the rhythm.
“It was a nice experience. I wasn’t expecting much from myself to be honest, but I wanted to create a rhythm going forward into the five-Test matches. The intensity will be high. Also, to stand on the field for 90 overs takes a lot of effort, so it all started from here (match against Andhra Pradesh),” Iyer told JioCinema.
Despite his underwhelming show in the South Africa Tests, Iyer managed to retain his place in the first two matches against England. The Proteas bowlers exploited Iyer’s weakness against short balls which the English pacers will also look to target.
The flamboyant batter shared the pros and cons of playing Test matches.
“You have to take one match at a time and not think much ahead. You have to take all the factors into consideration. In terms of your mental ability, the stress is going to be a lot but at the same time, you have to handle the pressure situations well. So, these are the pros and cons of playing Test matches,” he added.
Iyer further talked about the mental aspect of the game in Test cricket and said it was important for him to play Ranji Trophy to get used to the situation.
“You have to be mentally inclined towards adapting across 90 overs and as I mentioned, this was the right practice for me coming into the Ranji Trophy and getting used to the situation,” he added.
