His Aggression And Winning Attitude Will Help: Brett Lee Feels ‘India Is In Safe Hands’ With Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir was announced as the new head coach of the Indian men's cricket team on July 9 by BCCI secretary Jay Shah, and in his first series, India will face Sri Lanka later this month.

Former Australian pacer Brett Lee has welcomed the appointment of former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team. According to the legendary cricketer, who picked up more than 700 wickets in international cricket, India is in safe hands with Gambhir, and the 42-year-old former left-handed batter’s aggression and winning attitude will help the Men in Blue.

Gambhir was appointed as the new head coach of the Indian men’s cricket team on July 9. BCCI secretary Jay Shah took to X (formerly Twitter) to confirm his appointment. The top scorer for India in the 2007 T20 World Cup and 2011 ODI World Cup final is appointed for a period of three and a half years and will make his coaching debut later this month when India travels to Sri Lanka to face the Islanders in three T20Is and as many ODIs.

During an interview with the Times of India, Lee, who was the leading wicket-taker for the Ricky Ponting-led Australian team in the 2003 ODI World Cup, praised Gambhir and said, “He’s (Gautam Gambhir) done a terrific job every time he’s had an opportunity. The Indian Premier League title with KKR is the best example. He’s always been there, always at the top of his game. He finds a way to unite his players and graft his team together. He builds a solid structure. He has been a terrific player, and his aggression and winning attitude will help India. He has shone internationally as a player. India is in safe hands with Gautam Gambhir as coach. Congratulations to Rahul for finishing on a high.”

Lee had played under Gambhir’s leadership during his time in the IPL for the Kolkata Knight Riders and was part of the Gambhir-led side that won the IPL title in 2012 by getting the better of the Chennai Super Kings in the final.

Gambhir was BCCI’s choice to succeed Rahul Dravid as head coach after, as a mentor, he helped the Shreyas Iyer-led side dominate the 2024 edition of the IPL and end the decade-long wait for the third title.
