The 2024 edition of the Indian Premier League is well and truly underway as we have witnessed a couple of gilt-edged games even before the conclusion of the opening weekend.

The first round of games has produced multiple memorable moments already, and yet there is still so much on offer as we roll into Super Sunday with a mouth-watering clash between Gujarat Titans and Mumbai Indians.

The match will be noted for the return of former GT skipper Hardik Pandya to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, in the blue of MI.

Following the move of the maverick Indian all-rounder to the five-time winners, Shubman Gill was named as the man to lead the GT side going ahead.

Ahead of his debut as the GT skipper on Sunday, Gill spoke about the leaders he has had the opportunity to play under.

“I haven’t played under Mahi Bhai (MS Dhoni) as such, but watching him as a kid go about things on the field, he is my inspiration,” the opener said.

Gill went on to add that he has played most of his cricket under the leadership of Indian skipper Rohit Sharma, and expressed that he would look to pick up a lot of the 36-year-old’s qualities.

“I have played under Virat (Kohli) Bhai as well, but I have played most of my cricket under Rohit (Sharma) Bhai and there are a lot of qualities I will be picking personally from him,” the 24-year-old said.

GT have a brilliant record at home against the visiting MI, and Gill said he hopes for the streak to continue.

“It is amazing to play against Mumbai Indians, who have won the title five times. But playing them in Ahmedabad, we haven’t lost a match here against MI, so hopefully we are going to continue the streak,” he explained.

Pandya was named as the man to lead Mumbai Indians after his move to the Paltan, and Gill said that the return of the former GT skipper to Ahmedabad was an interesting dynamic.

“It is going to be exciting. Hardik (Pandya) Bhai is someone, who I have played under in the Indian team as well as at GT. So it is going to be an exciting and fantastic dynamic,” Gill opined.

Gill concluded by expressing optimism that the GT faithful flock to the Stadium in hordes when the home side take on the strong Mumbai Indians.

“Hopefully it is going be a hundred and ten thousand people cheering for us and there is nothing better than that,” he said.
