'Don't Think There is Any Need For That': Former Aussie International Defends 'Overrated' Jibes on Glenn Maxwell - WATCH
The former Australian international, Callum Ferguson jumped to the defence of his Australian compatriot Glenn Maxwell who has been branded as 'the most overrated player in IPL'.

While the Royal Challengers might be riding on a high, keeping their hopes for a playoff spot alive after winning four games on the bounce, one key player who is yet to fire this season is the Australian international Glenn Maxwell.

Reacting to Maxwell’s torrid run of form with the bat, Parthiv Patel, the former RCB man and India international, posted a scathing tweet on his official handle on X branding the middle-order batter as ‘the most overrated player in IPL history’.

However, the former Australian international, Callum Ferguson jumped to the defence of Maxwell and reckons that there wasn’t any need of such a statement.

Speaking at a show by ESPNCricinfo, he backed the Australian for having a good record despite batting at number 5 or 6 and referenced some of the bigger names in the tournament and made a comparison to their records.

“I don’t think there is any need for that sort of statement. When you look at some IPL players that have played over a long period, I look at Glenn Maxwell’s record in IPL cricket, 132 games, averaging 25 at a strike rate of 156. They’re pretty good numbers for a guy who bats predominantly at 5-6,” said the former Aussie international.

He even referenced the great Brendon McCullum and current Indian skipper, Rohit Sharma’s record in the tournament and credited Maxwell’s impressive strike rate.

Ferguson commented, “When we look at Brendon McCullum’s career, 109 games averaging at 27.5 and a strike-rate of 131. Rohit Sharma, 255 games averaging 29.5 at 131. It depends on where you’re batting”.

“Now Glenn’s numbers are quite often, he’s gonna go through a run of outs from time to time, so his average might be a bit low but his strike rate is through the roof,” he added.

Ferguson looking at the records suggested that Maxwell on his day can win you games and concluded by stating that Parthiv’s statements are not nearly accurate.

“So he wins you games when he gets going, just like the other two but the numbers look different. For me that statement, I just don’t like it, unnecessary and certainly not something I believe is anywhere the right mark,” he concluded.

With the season heading towards the business end, RCB could face a situation where Maxwell will be required to fire and the franchise will hope that he can deliver and propel them to the playoffs.
