Recent reports highlight the preservation of the house where the renowned spiritualist Ramana Maharshi was born, situated in Virudhunagar, Tamil Nadu. Virudhunagar, celebrated for its rich history, political significance, and spiritual essence, has become a pilgrimage site drawing people from all corners of the country. Ramana Maharshi, an influential spiritual figure, was born in this district, and a memorial stands at the location of his birthplace.

Located near the Bhoominathar temple on Tiruchuli main road, the house can be found by inquiring locally upon reaching Tiruchuli. Accessible via bus routes from Virudhunagar to Ramanathapuram and further to Sivagangai, or through Aruppukottai, the house is a testament to the spiritual legacy of Ramana Maharshi.

While the original birthplace was reportedly demolished, a new house was constructed in May 2010. The current structure preserves the essence of Ramana Maharshi, featuring a large photograph of the spiritualist, as well as images of his parents. Surprisingly, the locals in Virudhunagar may not be universally aware of the significance of the Maharshi’s birthplace, despite followers from around the world making pilgrimages to the site.

Ramana Maharshi, originally Venkataraman Iyer, was born on December 30, 1879, into a Hindu Brahmin family. At the age of 16, he encountered a profound fear of death, marking a transformative moment that propelled him towards spirituality. Seeking knowledge, he delved into spiritual literature such as Periyapuranam. His spiritual journey led him to board a train to Tiruvannamalai, where he eventually attained enlightenment. Ramana Maharshi passed away at the age of 70 on April 14, 1950, leaving behind a lasting legacy in the realm of spirituality.
