US pushes India for defence deals
US wants support facilities at Indian ports for its warships.

New Delhi: Among the key points made at the bilateral Defence Policy Group meeting in Delhi on Saturday, the US wants support facilities at Indian ports for its warships.

It is also objecting to the 50 per cent offsets demanded by India to the firm which wins the order for 126 multi-role jets.

The US wants to sign a logistical support agreement with India.

While the CCS is to decide on this request, the concern is that India may end up indirectly aiding the US war in Iraq.

The US has also hinted it wants India to re-tender the helicopter order recently won by Eurocopter, which is for 197 helicopters for the Army. America's Bell company lost out after trials.

At the talks, India showed interest in buying another amphibious warship like the Trenton.

India is also looking for American sub-systems for the new ships it is building.
