New Delhi: The Sensex surged strongly by a whopping 322 points as the upbeat mood gathered momentum on the back of across-the-board buying by operators as well as sustained global firmness.

The 30-share sensitive index recovered its last Monday's 617 point fall in the consecutive four-day rally.

The 30-share-index opened firm at 12,904.85 points and gradually moved upward to the intra-day high of 13,194.00 before ending the day at 13,177.74 from Thursday's close of 12,856.08 points, netting a rise of 321.66 points or 2.5 per cent.

The BSE bellwether has gained 722.37 points or 5.8 per cent in four straight trading sessions since April three. The broader S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) also rallied sharply, ending at 3,843.50 points, a net rise of 91.50 points or 2.44 per cent over previous close of 3,752.00.

Operators aggressively covered short positions in the Futures and Options (F&O) before the earning season even as high interest rates and consistent inflation pressures remained the cause of concern, brokers said.

The market sentiment was well supported by a strong surge in Asia. Japan's Nikkei ended up by 1.48 per cent, China's Shanghai Composite Index by 2.27 per cent, Singapore's Strait Times by 1.62 per cent, South Korea's Kospi by 1.14 per cent and Taiwan's Weighted Index by 0.65 per cent.

IT major Infosys Technologies will announce Q4 results with its future guidance on April 13, which may provide direction for the market.
