Radia tapes are much more than just 2G, says SC

New Delhi: The Supreme Court on Wednesday slammed the CBI over the Niira Radia tapes, saying the conversations are of very serious nature. The apex court pointed out that the taped conversation included cross-border transactions which have been sidelined by the investigative agency.

The court asked as to why no action has been taken when it was clear in 2009 that all types of things were prima facie discussed in the conversations.

"The issue of 2G spectrum and telecom are among multiple matters contained in conversations of Radia with businessmen, politicians and others," said the court.

"The taped conversations reflect that middlemen are virtually present in every nook and corner of government," the court added.

The apex court had on August 1 pulled up the government for sitting on the tapes for five years and not taking any action. It also pulled up the Additional Solicitor General saying that had it not been for the Supreme Court, the government would not have done anything.

The court had then observed that corporate lobbyist Niira Radia tapes have an element of criminality and needed to be probed further. The court said that these tapes can't be considered as private tapes.

The court is hearing CBI plea on the element of criminality in these tapes. The CBI had on July 31 told the court that there was an element of criminality in these tapes. It submitted a sealed report on Radia's conversations with several top names including journalists in the 2G spectrum allocation scam to the Supreme Court.
