Mumbai: The markets ended weak after three straight sessions of gain on account of profit booking seen at the higher level.
The Sensex closed at 12,961.90 down 62.36 points and the Nifty closed at 3744 down 25 points.
The BSE Small Cap Index closed at 6,392.59 down 91.21 points.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 5,396.13 down 26.50 points.
The BSE FMCG Index gained 1.5 per cent at 2,048.76. Colgate, McDowell, HLL, Dabur India and Tata Tea closed in green.
The BSE Metal Index was down 0.4 per cent to close at 9,065.95. NALCO, Guj NRE Coke, Jindal Saw, Welspun Guj, JindalStainless were among the losers.
The BSE Bankex was down 0.5 per cent at 6,484.06. HDFC Bank, Federal Bank, Karnataka Bank, ICICI Bank and Oriental Bank moved downwards.
The BSE Health Care Index was plunged 0.3 per cent at 3,641.60. Biocon, Glenmark, Sterling Bio, Cadila Health, FDC closed lower.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 0.4 per cent at 8,666.13. Alfa Laval, KEC Infrastruct, Ingersoll Rand, Siemens, ABB and Praj Industries ended lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,357.22 down 0.6 per cent. Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors, Sundram and Hind Motors and Bajaj Auto were among the losers.
The BSE IT Index closed at 4,821.98 down 0.8 per cent. Patni Computer, Wipro, HCL Tech, Mphasis BFL and Infosys ended weak.
The BSE Oil and Gas Index closed flat at 6,045.54.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 8753.39 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 28650.79 crore.
The BSE cash turnover was Rs 4395.26 crore.
Total market wide turnover was at Rs 41799.44 crore.
