Mumbai: The market ended near the day's low as heavy selling pressure was seen in during the final hour of trade. The cues from gobal peers were weak as most of Asia ended down.
The top laggard was Taiwan down 3.5%, followed by Hang Seng down 3% and Taiwan down 2.5%. The broader markets outperformed the benchmark indices. Selling is seen in index pivotals from bank, IT, oil and gas and banking space.
Sensex was down nearly 300 points and Nifty was down 100 points by the close.
The BSE Midcap Index ended at 9,375.94 up 0.4%. The BSE Smallcap Index ended at 12,007.33 up 1%.
Sensex was down 271.48 points or 1.33% at 20104.39, and the Nifty down 101.20 points or 1.64% at 6058.10.
About 1950 shares have advanced, 1102 shares declined, and 38 shares are unchanged.
The BSE Bankex was down 2% at 11,495.40. ICICI Bank, Andhra Bank, Centurion Bank, SBI, Oriental Bank moved downwards.
The BSE Capital Goods Index was down 1.2% at 20,061.96. Triveni Engg, Thermax, Jyoti Structure, BEML, Suzlon Energy closed lower.
The BSE Auto Index closed at 5,765.56 down 0.1%. Maruti Suzuki, Tube Investment, Escorts, Ashok Leyland, Tata Motors closed lower.
The BSE Metal Index closed at 19,767.72 up 0.6%. JSW Steel, Tata Steel, Sesa Goa, Hindalco, Shree Precoated closed higher.
The BSE FMCG Index closed at 2,231.77 up 2%. Tata Tea, ITC, Bata India, Godrej Consumer closed higher.
BSE Oil and Gas Index closed at 12,867.24 down 2%. Essar Oil, GAIL, BPCL, Reliance Natura, Reliance Petro ended in red.
The BSE IT Index was down 1.7% at 4,284.37. HCL Tech, Mphasis, Satyam, TCS, Patni Computer closed lower.
The NSE cash turnover was at Rs 21744.60 crore and the NSE F&O turnover was at Rs 70156.51 crore. The BSE cash turnover was Rs 10160.46 crore. Total market wide turnover was at Rs 102061.57 crore.
