The Maharashtra government has increased the fees for VIP vehicle numbers, including the highly sought-after ‘0001’.
In cities like Mumbai and Pune, the cost for this premium number will now be Rs 6 lakh for four-wheelers, up from the previous Rs 4 lakh.
According to NDTV, for even rarer out-of-series VIP numbers, the fees could skyrocket to Rs 18 lakh in major cities, a price comparable to a brand-new mid-range car.
According to the transport department’s notification dated August 30, the cost of the ‘0001’ number will rise to Rs 5 lakh for four-wheelers, from the earlier Rs 3 lakh. For two- and three-wheelers, the fee will double from Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh.
The fee hike reflects growing demand in high-profile areas like Mumbai, Thane, Pune, and Aurangabad, where many wealthy individuals, top businessmen, and celebrities prefer these exclusive numbers for their luxury vehicles.
If the ‘0001’ number is unavailable in the current series, getting it from another series will now cost Rs 15 lakh for four-wheelers and Rs 3 lakh for two- and three-wheelers, according to the new rules.
Additionally, the state government has now permitted the transfer of VIP numbers to immediate family members, such as spouses and children, which was previously restricted.
This fee revision, the first since 2013, comes after a draft notification issued on September 16, 2022.
