This warning comes as the first of two back-to-back atmospheric rivers slowly pushed into California last week, triggering statewide storm preparations and calls for people to get ready for potential flooding, heavy snow and damaging winds. Known as a “Pineapple Express” because its long plume of moisture stretched back across the Pacific to near Hawaii, the storm rolled into the far north first. US forecasters expect an even more powerful storm to follow it Sunday.

In a statement on X on Sunday, the Office of the Governor of California said the state is ready with a record number of emergency assets on the ground to respond to this storm. “This is a serious storm with dangerous and potentially life-threatening impacts. Pay attention to any emergency orders or alerts from local officials,” it added.

According to the US broadcaster, further northwest in Ventura County, the flood threat has been labeled as considerable and is an “extremely dangerous flood situation unfolding from the Santa Barbara area and nearby foothills.” “Local law enforcement reported numerous flooded roads, vehicles submerged, rock and mud slides, and quickly rising levels of area rivers,” the US weather service said.

Over 550,000 customers in the state now experiencing power outages as the state receives heavy rain and wind. As of 4:15 pm local time, over half a million customers are in the dark in many coastal and southern parts of California, according to PowerOutage.us. Multiple universities in the state of California are pivoting to online classes on Monday as the state expects to continue facing extreme wind and rain.
