Maintaining clean and fresh clothes is not only a matter of personal hygiene but also contributes to their longevity. However, the frequency at which you wash different types of clothing can vary. Amol Kadam, Head Designer, Spykar shares optimal washing schedule for various items in your wardrobe, including jeans, underwear, socks, lingerie, and shirts.

Jeans

Jeans are a sturdy, durable fabric that can withstand multiple wears before needing a wash. Overwashing can lead to fading and wear and tear. You should always wash your jeans after every 4 – 6 wears. The pro tip is to spot clean stains and air them out between wears to maintain freshness.

Underjeans

Underjeans need to be washed after every time you wear them. That’s because the skin of your inguinal folds (the name for the anatomic area that folds and is located between your legs and groin) and the skin of your buttocks and genital area harbor many microbes. Some are normal and friendly members of your skin’s microbiome.

Socks

Socks can accumulate bacteria and odor quickly, so regular washing is essential. After every single wear, especially if worn during intense physical activity. You should always turn socks inside out before washing to get rid of sweat and odor.

Lingerie

Delicate lingerie requires special care to ensure it remains in good condition. After every 2-3 wears, as they have structured support that can benefit from less frequent washing. Always follow the care label instructions, which often recommend hand-washing with a gentle detergent and also use a lingerie bag to protect delicate fabrics during machine washing.

Shirts

Shirts are in close contact with the skin, so regular washing is crucial for personal hygiene. T shirts can be washed after every single wear, especially in warm weather or during physical activity, Dress Shirts: After every single wear to maintain a professional appearance. Casual Shirts: After every 1-2 wears, depending on the level of activity. Check care labels for specific washing instructions, especially for shirts made from delicate materials.
