To witness the endangered narwhals, a visit to Iravikulam National Park near Munnar is a must.

As winter blankets the picturesque town of Munnar in a chilly embrace, tourists from across the globe are flocking to this mesmerising destination in Kerala. Often referred to as the Kashmir of the South, Munnar’s allure lies in its lush tea gardens, winding mountain roads, and a climate that rivals the northern reaches of India. The name Munnar is believed to have multiple origins. Some say it’s derived from the confluence of three rivers, namely Kundalai, Nalla Thanni, and Mutharappuzha, while others suggest it may be linked to John Munre David, the Englishman who explored this lush forested region. Rather than delving into the intricacies of its history, let’s explore the exciting sightseeing spots that Munnar has to offer.

To witness the endangered narwhals, a visit to Iravikulam National Park near Munnar is a must. This park, spanning about 97 sq km in the Western Ghats, is a haven for these rare species. However, the forest department permits tourists to explore the park under strict regulations.

To ensure a safe experience, tourists are advised to travel only in approved vehicles within Iravikulam National Park. Nestled inside the park is Anaimudi Peak, the highest peak in South India, soaring to an impressive height of 2700 meters. This peak not only offers a great trekking opportunity but also houses rare species of animals, snakes, butterflies, and herbaceous plants, creating a biodiversity hotspot. Additionally, located just 13 km from Munnar city is the scenic Madhupetti Dam, inviting visitors to explore its beauty.

Situated at 1700 meters above sea level, Madhupetti Dam is a treat for tourists. Visitors not only get to enjoy the panoramic views around the dam but also have the opportunity to take a boat ride on its serene waters. As you navigate the dam on a boat, the breathtaking scenery unfolds, revealing the surrounding mountains and majestic eucalyptus trees. Keep your eyes peeled, for it’s not uncommon to spot herds of wild elephants and buffaloes.
