'What The Batters’ Failure to Get Big Runs Also...': Sunil Gavaskar on Importance of Ranji Trophy For Players Before Test Series
Gavaskar suggested that it is important for players to play first-class matches before any Test series to get the right frame of mind.

Batting great Sunil Gavaskar opened up on the Indian batters’ underwhelming show in the ongoing Test series against England. In the first two Tests, the Indian batters have failed to live up to the expectations against the inexperienced English spin attack.

Yashasvi Jaiswal is the only player who displayed consistency and promise with the bat for the hosts while Shubman Gill also scored a century in Vizag but he lacked consistency in the red-ball format.

Gavaskar suggested that it is important for players to play first-class matches before any Test series to get the right frame of mind.

“What the batters’ failure to get big runs also shows how important it is before a Test match series for both batters and bowlers to play some first-class [Ranji] games and get themselves in the right frame of mind for the longer format of the game,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-Day.

“The Ranji Trophy had started, and it would have been perfect timing for the batters to get into the groove for the Test series by playing a couple of games,” he added.

Several Indian batters including skipper Rohit Sharma, Shreyas Iyer and KS Bharat are under the pump for their below-par performances with the bat in recent times.

Debutant Rajat Patidar also failed to make an impact in the middle at Vizag as India dearly missed Virat Kohli who is currently on a short break due to personal reasons.

Meanwhile, the batting great was highly impressed with Yashasvi Jaiswal for his disciplined double century.

“Yashasvi Jaiswal showed he is a quick learner by making sure he didn’t miss out on a hundred as he did in the first Test match by scoring a magnificent double century in the second Test,” Gavaskar wrote.

“India certainly needed someone to hold the innings together with a big century as once again most of the other batters got going like they did in the first Test and then gifted their wickets away,” he added.
