Threads Finally Brings Support For Hashtags, But It Comes With A Big Twist
Meta has finally added support for tags on Threads, allowing users to easily find topics. However, these are not hashtags. Here's what's different.

Meta has finally added support for tags in Threads. Yes, they aren’t exactly hashtags, but they work differently than how some other platforms like Instagram and X (formerly known as Twitter) work, as announced by Adam Mosseri.

“The ability to tag a topic on your post is now rolling out globally so you can categorize your posts and make it easier for others to find and join in on the conversation,” Adam Mosseri said on Threads.

How Are Tags Different Than Hashtags?

Mosseri says that tags are a simpler take on hashtags, as they don’t make the # mark visible.

To add a tag, you start by tapping the # symbol and then adding your topic of choice. But unlike hashtags, you can type multiple words, with or without spaces, and even add special characters.

Mosseri notes that this “design focuses tags more on communities and less on engagement hacking, and does so while keeping threads simple and easy to use.”

When Is It Rolling Out?

Meta notes that this feature is now rolling out for people globally, and once you do get the feature, you can start tagging topics, and hence, connect with people who are posting about the same thing—essentially allowing you to connect with like-minded people.

Mark Zuckerberg first announced this feature last month when Meta was testing a way for users to categorise their posts with tags. This feature was initially only available in Australia, but it is now available globally.
