History and Significance
World Hindi Day was first celebrated on January 10, 2006, after former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh designated this date as World Hindi Day. This day was reportedly picked to mark the anniversary of the first time when Hindi was spoken in the United Nations General Assembly in 1949. Since 1975, the Ministry of External Affairs has been organising World Hindi Conferences in countries like the United Kingdom, Mauritius, Trinidad and Tobago, the United States of America, and Fiji. These are the countries with a significant Hindi-speaking population. Last year’s conference was held in Fiji in association with the Government of Fiji.

- As per the 2011 Language Census, released in 2018, Hindi is the only scheduled language with an increase in general speaking population. It showed an increase of almost 6%.
