From Yash Dhull to Shaikh Rasheed: Where are the Previous Under-19 Winners Now
The U19 triumph has historically been a stepping stone for youngsters for greater success. But how has Yash Dhull and Co. 's careers panned out after the 2022 success? Let’s have a look.

Defending champions India are set to compete in the forthcoming edition of the Under-19 World Cup, starting January 19 in South Africa. Under the leadership of Uday Saharan, the colts will begin their campaign on Saturday against Bangladesh at Mangaung Oval, Bloemfontein. The team will look to take the lead from what Yash Dhull & Co. did in the West Indies in 2022. They defeated England in the final by 4 wickets to bring home a record 5th title.

The U19 triumph has historically been a stepping stone for youngsters for greater success, exemplified none better than Virat Kohli’s career progression. Be it the likes of Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh before him or Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and Prithvi Shaw after him, success at the biennial event often opens the door for a look at the national level.

Most of the top performers from the 2022 batch made their domestic debuts the same year. The likes of Yash Dhull, Raj Bawa, Shaikh Rasheed, Vicky Ostwal, Harnoor Pannu, Dinesh Bana, Rajvardhan Hangargekar and Kaushal Tambe played their first-ever First-class games after scripting history in the Carribean. But how the Yash Dhull and Co. ‘s careers panned out further? Let’s have a look:

Yash Dhull (C): Delhi’s Yash Dhull scored 229 runs in the edition including a run-a-ball 110 in the semi-final. His excellent run in the ICC event got him an IPL contract from the Delhi Capitals. That propelled him into the domestic circuit (Delhi) that year itself and he had a dream start hammering 479 runs in just three matches including three hundreds with a best of 200 not out. The following season he played 6 FC games scoring 422 runs including two fifties. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy the same year, he ended up as the third-highest run-getter for his team. However, injury concerns followed by below-par performances in the IPL 2023 led him out of the limelight. He was recently named the captain of Delhi in the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 season but a poor batting show followed by a shocking defeat against Puducherry at home, saw him lose his captaincy to Himmat Singh.

Shaikh Rasheed (vc): The Andhra batter ended the tournament with 201 runs, including 2 fifties, and his flamboyancy in the event got him under the wings of MS Dhoni in the Indian Premier League (IPL). He’s yet to make his debut in the IPL but has been a consistent performer in the domestic circuit. So far, he has played 7 First-class games for Andhra, scoring 312 runs. He has 10 T20s and 8 List A games, and amassed 62 and 296 runs, respectively.

Dinesh Bana (wk): Wicketkeeper-batter Dinesh Bana represents Haryana in domestic cricket and has played 2 List A and 8 T20 matches, scoring 1 and 118 runs, respectively. He played 6 games in the Under-19 World Cup 2022, scoring 63 runs. He affected 11 dismissals in the tournament, including 9 catches and a couple of stumpings.

Raj Angad Bawa: The Chandigarh all-rounder notched the highest individual score, 162 not-out against Uganda, and also ended the tournament as the second-most run-getter for India with 252 runs. He also picked 9 wickets in 6 matches. His heroics got him an IPL deal from the Punjab Kings. But he could muster just 11 runs in 2 games and was ruled out of the 2023 season due to injury. The franchise released him before the 2024 edition.

Aneeshwar Gautam: The bowling all-rounder played just 2 games in the tournament and picked up as many wickets. However, he managed to get a bid from the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the players’ auction. Unfortunately, he couldn’t get a game before getting released ahead of the 2023 season.

Rajvardhan Hangargekar: After picking up 5 wickets in 6 games and lifting the trophy, CSK picked Hangargekar and has been investing on the right-arm pacer since then. He made his IPL debut last year and has taken 3 wickets in 2 matches. He has also represented Maharashtra in 4 first-class games, taking 13 wickets. He has 24 List A wickets in 22 matches and 11 scalps from 14 T20s.

Vicky Ostwal: The highest wicket-taker for India in the tournament, Ostwal represents Maharashtra in the domestic circuit. He has pocketed 9 wickets in 6 first-class games and is a part of the Delhi Capitals camp in the IPL.

Nishant Sindhu: After picking up 6 wickets and scoring 140 runs in the previous edition, the Haryana all-rounder got an IPL contract from CSK and is still a part of the franchise. Sindhu has so far played 16 First-class matches, scoring 953 runs and picking 33 wickets. He has 26 List A wickets in 26 matches and has taken 11 wickets in 15 T20s.

Angkrish Raghuvanshi: Raghuvanshi was the highest scorer for India in the U-19 World Cup 2022 with 278 runs in 6 matches. He made it to the Kolkata Kight Riders camp but is yet to make his IPL debut. He has 138 and 133 runs in 5 T20s and 7 List-A games for Mumbai.

Harnoor Singh Pannu: The all-rounder featured in the IPL 2022 players’ auction but went unsold. Currently, he represents Chandigarh in the domestic circuit and has played 3 First-class games.

Aradhya Yadav: The Ghaziabad wicketkeeper didn’t get a game in the World Cup. He represents Uttar Pradesh in the domestic circuit and has played only one First-class game since making his debut in 2022.

R Ravi Kumar: The left-arm quick, who was the second-highest wicket-taker for India in the event, plays for Bengal and has represented the state in 5 matches since making his domestic debut in 2022.

Kaushal Tambe: The Maharashtra all-rounder contributed with 67 runs and 5 wickets in the tournament but is yet to crack an IPL deal. He has played 1 First-class, 9 List A and 3 T20s, scoring 64, 232 and 69 runs, respectively.

Vasu Vats, Siddarth Yadav, and Garv Sangwan played one game each in the tournament while Manav Parakh didn’t get a game. All of them are yet to make their domestic debuts.
